Melissa Holding and the Koto

An Informal Concert

Thursday 27th March 2014 at 7:30pm

Physic Garden, Petersfield
(Entrance located off the High Street, Petersfield)

We are delighted That Melissa Holding will perform an informal concert for us playing the koto. The koto is a traditional Japanese stringed musical instrument, similar to the Chinese zheng, the Mongolian yatga and the Korean gayageum. The koto is the national instrument of Japan and are made from kiri wood (Paulownia tomentosa). They comprise strings that are strung over movable bridges along the width of the instrument. Players can adjust the string pitches by moving the bridges before playing and using three finger picks to pluck the strings.

Melissa Holding studied the koto at the University of Fine Arts in Kyoto, Japan, where she lived for 9 years. She now performs regularly giving concerts both as a soloist and with the contemporary music ensemble Okeanos and has performed at many festivals including the City of London, Spitalfields and Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. Melissa has also worked for the National Theatre as composer and musical director on The Oresteia and Chekhov's Ivanov, and has written and devised music for silent Japanese film, most notably at the Barbican - Taki no Shiraito directed by Mizoguchi.
