The British Film Institute is promoting the restoration of An Autumn Afternoon, the final film by Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu. The film is being shown around the country and will be shown at the BFI's cinema on the South Bank followed by showings in Hammersmith and Chichester.

The film was originally released in 1962 and depicts the story of elderly widower Shuhei Hirayama and his daughter Michiko entertaining decidedly mixed emotions about the prospect of her getting married and leaving her father to fend for himself.

Showings of the film are taking place as follows:
- From 16th May: BFI Cinema, South Bank
- 25th May: Riverside Studios, Hammersmith
- 8th-9th June: New Park, Chichester

Timings and admission fees will vary from venue to venue and so it is recommended that you consult individual venue websites to gather more information. The film is in colour and has English subtitles. The film holds a PG certificate and is deemed suitable for general viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children.

New Year Message

Date Posted: 31st December 2013

Dear Members and Friends. We hope you all had a great Christmas, the Chairman and Committee of the Japan Society Southern Counties would like to wish you a Happy New Year.

This will be the eighth year since we re-launched, and we hope that everyone has enjoyed the programmes we have arranged. As it will be Chairman Wendy's 80th year, and she has found she has not regained her energy levels as fast as she had hoped after her medical problems, she has suggested, and the Committee has agreed, that for 2014 it would be a good idea to have an event every other month instead of every month, and to make every event extra special.

SUJAS Social Gathering & Film Showing:
Dear Doctor

Date Posted: 1st April 2013

SUJAS's fortnightly film showing on the 1st May is the film "Dear Doctor".

Winner of 21 major Japanese film awards, Miwa Nishikawa's Dear Doctor is deceptively simple. At first glance, it's a typically middle class picture that idolizes the slow and simple life of the tiny village where a young intern (Eita) comes to train under the watchful eye of the kindly old local doctor (Tsurube Shofukutei). But this is not a yawn inducing slice of mushy sentiment: as it turns out, Tsurube is not really a doctor at all. Instead, he is a con man who has been hoodwinking these gullible villagers for decades. Or has he?
