JSSC WALK Saturday
24 July 2010
SELBORNE 2 hours plus stops to admire the views. In the footsteps of Gilbert White, the world’s first ecologist (1720 – 1793).
The walk takes in Gilbert White’s famous zig-zag path up Selborne Hanger behind Gilbert White’s house and follows footpaths, where Gilbert studied the natural world. Start at 10:00 in the free car park behind the Selborne Arms on the south side of the B3006 through Selborne village. Please arrive 5/10 minutes early so that we can order lunch before we set off. Lunch will be in the Selborne Arms, a traditional pub which dates back to 1600. The Selborne Arms offers 7 local real ales, 10 wines by the glass and a delicious, award-winning menu of locally-sourced produce. Snacks are also available. It is not a difficult walk, with a gentle climb to start and almost flat countryside to follow. There is a short stretch of metalled road, but most of the walk is through the wooded Selborne Hanger and woodland along part of the Hanger Way. Trainers or walking shoes are recommended and please bring water (and waterproofs if appropriate). Those who wish to stay after lunch and browse in the 2 or 3 village shops and pottery studio could have tea in Gilbert’s kitchen cafe at the other end of the village and maybe a cake, made to the White household’s 18th century recipe. There is a small shop inside the house devoted to local and natural products. Please e-mail Pauline and Neil Hook, or leave a telephone message, if you would like to join the walk (so that we can wait for you at the start!).
