AGM. Guest speakers . Our Patron  former British Ambassador to Japan Sir Sydney Giffard and Daisuke Tsuchiya Deputy Head of the Japanese Embassy’s  Japanese Information and Cultural Centre , and Petersfield’s Town Mayor Mrs Hilary Ayer all gave very interesting talks. A good turn out!

A Japanese Lunch   Cooked by Jeffery, former chef at Old Thorn’s Nippon Kan restaurant, a big success, more than 55 attended.

Japanese Festivals-memories of 13 happy years in Japan.  A talk by Neil Hook, former British Ambassador to Turkmenistan, former HM Consul General in Osaka

“Walk Japan” A lecture from a member of the organisation which arranges walking tours in Japan.

Japanese Treasurers in the British Library. A talk by Hamish Todd, curator of the Japanese collection  in the British Library.

Creating a Japanese Garden. A return visit from Chelsea Gold Medal Winning Japanese Garden Designer Professor Fukuhara who lectures in Japanese, and his translator Angela Davies , Chairman of the Japan Society North West

Aspects of Japanese Art and Design. The Kimono. Gail Forrest who lectures and gives courses for NADFAS and WEA will bring down her collection of kimonos as worn by men , women and children, including gold- and silver-embroidered bridal ribes and others woven, dyed, embroidered and painted, also obi sashes, undergarments and hair ornaments. We hope also to arrange at around the same time an exhibition in Petersfield of her collection of lacquerware, ceramics, tea ceremony utensils and kumihimo braiding, and also a lecture for ladies only by another expert who will show us how to put on a kimono.

The Art of the Japanese  Sword . A talk by James Hammond is Bonham’s Auctioneers expert on Japanese swords. He will bring some down to show us and tell about the tradition  of sword-making in Japan.

Joji Hirota - a Tailko Drumming Workshop and  brief drumming demonstration..
Following his popular concert in Petersfield in 2008 Joji returns to teach us how Taiko drumming is done and tell us about its history. Entry by ticket only-prices to be advised.

 

Sunday December 5th  At   Rosemary Alexander’s Guest  Cottage

Sushi and mince pies!  A social lunch  when everyone brings some traditional Japanese or Western Christmas food, plus a small wrapped gift, to be  distributed by  Santa-san.

All events take place at the Physic Garden Hall in Petersfield at 7.30 pm, unless advised otherwise, and are free to members( non members £5.00, students £2.00)  unless ticketed. .  After most meetings you are very welcome to join the committee and speaker for a meal at a local  restaurant (at your own expense! ) Further enquiries: Wendy Arnold Tel: 01730 266992
