Programme for 2011

 

Thursday March 24th

Physic Garden Hall, Petersfield, 7.30pm

 

 

AGM. Due to the current tragic events in Japan, we  used this AGM as a fund-raising event for the British and Japanese Red Cross We announced the appointment of our new Patron, former British Ambassador to Japan Sir Graham Fry.  Daisuke Tsuchiya Ist Secretary of the Japanese Emnbassy , Heidi Potter, Chief Executive of London’s  Japan Society  and her colleague Yoko Kobayashi joined us.  There was an  Election of Society Officers. Then Heidi and Yoko-san taught us   clever ways to use furoshiki,  traditional Japanese cloth squares, and Tsuchiya-san drew the raffle, which raised over £300.00.

Thursday April 28th

United Reformed Church Hall, Petersfield

The Sussex Bonsai Group.  Chairman Andrew Ford and 3 of his members  visited us and talked about bonsai and his group’s interest in it, and showed us some enchanting little trees. . www.sussexbonsaigroup.co.uk

The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation.  Stephen McEnally, Director of this foundation whose generous grants have allowed our JSSC to continue existing,  explained the work of the Foundation. 

Thursday June 23rd

Physic Garden Hall,

Petersfield

“ Gaijin in Geta”.  A talk by Mary- Grace Browning MBE who has been involved in Anglo-Japanese relations since the age of 14.  She has taken exchange groups of young people to Japan and from Japan to the UK for 25 years, combining this with being a part-time teacher of Japanese and Science.

Sunday 24th July   

 Petersfield area.

A Walk in the beautiful English Countryside. Starting and finishing in Burisford, a very scenic exploration of the South Downs behind Burisford, meeting at the church, finishing   at the Master Robert pub.                    

 

Thursday August 25th

Physic Garden Hall, Petersfield, 7.30pm

Exploits of a British woman in the Japanese Business World. A talk by Angela Davies, who has visited us before as translator for Chelsea Gold Medalist Fukuhara-sensei, and has many fascinating stories to tell.

Thursday September 22nd

 Melissa Holding, talented koto player and singer returns.

 

Saturday 15th October

United Reformed Church Hall, Petersdield, 2pm

The Martial Arts of Japan,  a Demonstration by Michael Jay.  This remarkable former BOAC senior pilot   has made a life-long study of Japan and its martial culture. Speaking fluent Japanese, he is respected in Japan and the UK for his mastery of many martial arts, and as an expert horseman and archer.  See profile: www.japansociety.org.uk/4614/jay-michael

Saturday 26th November United Reformed Church Hall, Petersfield, 2pm

Preparing Easy Home-Style Sushi.  Atsuko Yamano tells us about Kyoto cuisine, and we join in hands-on simple sushi making (To be confirmed)

Sunday December 4th

Christmas Party.  Sushi and mince pies!  Details to follow.

 

Please note.   Events take place at the Physic Garden Hall in Petersfield at 7.30 pm unless otherwise stated, and unless ticketed are free to members, £2.00 for students and £5.00 for non-members, everyone welcome.
